After suffering from a head injury that resulted in traumatic brain damage, you will likely find many facets of your life altered. Of course, some changes are easier to anticipate and you have likely already heard about them from the media or other sources.

But some changes go by unnoticed, or do not receive as much attention in the public eye. This can leave victims unprepared for the reality of their situation after a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Underreported mental health effects

Mayo Clinic goes into detail about matters related to TBIs. This includes the short and long-term impacts that TBIs have on a victim’s whole health. Of course, many people focus on the physical aspect of TBIs first. There is no problem with that, as the physical injuries do impact a victim greatly.

But there is a tendency for people to overlook or underreport on the mental effects that TBIs can have on victims. In reality, a TBI can severely alter a victim’s mental health in both the short and long term.

Memory problems and mental health disorders

For example, many victims suffer from memory issues that can last days, months or even a lifetime. This can put tremendous pressure on an individual, especially if they end up risking job loss due to said memory problems or any related cognitive impairment. Speaking of, TBI victims can struggle with things like math and conceptualization, or even understanding and communicating by speech.

Many TBI victims end up suffering from mental health disorders like depression, anxiety and even stress-trauma disorders because of this. It can entirely change a person’s life, behavior and state of being. This is just one of many reasons why victims seek compensation for damages and losses.
