Each car accident in New Hampshire comes with its own set of circumstances. The causes for accidents cover a wide range, and include such factors as driver error, bad road design and mechanical malfunction.

Each accident takes its toll on those involved, often resulting in serious injury or death as well as significant property damage and financial hardships.

Single-car crash in Canterbury

An NBC Boston affiliate provides some details of a Saturday night crash on I-93 that injured two. The driver lost control around 6:00 a.m. and subsequently went off the roadway, striking a tree and resulting in the rolling over of the vehicle. The 26-year-old male driver suffered life-threatening injuries and received treatment at Concord Hospital, as did the the passenger, a 25-year-old man.

Witness accounts indicate the driver exceeded the speed limit at the time of the crash. At the time of the report, the crash remained under investigation for possible driver impairment.

More fatal accidents in 2020

A report in the New Hampshire Union Leader cites officials who reported a spike in deadly accidents so far this year. This development came even as less people took to the roads during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. Traffic fatalities increased by 70 percent from January 1 to May 6, with 34 deaths recorded this year compared with 19 deaths at this stage in 2019. Highway safety officials also reported an increase in speeding this year.

These trends continue to neighboring states, with Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont reporting similar increases in serious accidents. In addition to speed, officials blame driver distraction as a contributing factor in many of the accidents.
