Construction accidents involving forklifts are prevalent

Construction workers in New Hampshire face numerous life-threatening hazards whenever they step onto their work sites. One of the dangers that cause significant numbers of construction accidents involves mechanical equipment such as forklifts. They are present on almost all construction sites, and the risks they pose are not always recognized.

Typical causes of forklift accidents include inadequate or no training, negligent operation, the lack of required maintenance and the use of improper attachments and tools. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration expects compliance with all safety regulations, but these rules are often disregarded. However, proper supervision could prevent injuries and deaths caused by forklifts.

Training in all aspects of forklift use is essential, including safe operation, loading and maintenance. Frequent inspections to identify the need for services is also crucial. Furthermore, training must cover loading procedures. Unbalanced loads can cause the machine to tip over, and workers must learn that forklifts are for lifting cargo and not for elevating workers. Training must include safe driving procedures and parking of the machine.

Using forklifts in enclosed areas without proper ventilation can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be fatal. These are but a few of the hazards posed by forklifts on construction sites. Sadly, some New Hampshire employers do not encourage compliance with safety regulations, often resulting in construction accidents. Injured workers may find comfort in knowing that the workers' compensation insurance program will provide coverage of medical expenses and lost wages, and they are free to use the services of an experienced workers' compensation attorney to navigate the claims for benefits for them.
